Rip Van Winkle

Dear Henry,

Or should I say, "Dear Rip?"

Rip Van Winkle is the story by Washington Irving written during the early 1800's about a man who has a crappy farm because he is lazy but people love him because he is docile and nice, except his wife because she is always annoyed with his laziness. One day he goes out, in the years before the American Revolution (believe me! you'll hear plenty about this from Mommy one day, now is not the time) and he goes a drinkin' with the boys to get away from his crag of a wife and falls asleep and sleeps and sleeps for 20 years and wakes up after the American Revolution and vows his loyalty to Kind George of England. He returns to his lazy life and lives with his grown daughter because his wife is dead. It is a story that is supposed to make husbands envious of Rip because he escaped his pain in the neck wife.

Okay, so now that I've reviewed the story from several resources and have written the brief summary above I am perplexed by something... Why in the hell would people want their children to read this story? Your very own mother played the role of Ms. Rip Van Winkle as a kindergartner in 1980 while wearing her great grandma's glass and as legend has it Mr. Rip Van Winkle, Craig Gant, had to endure me telling him all of his lines. I guess I fit the role.... I digress...

So you take after Mr. Van Winkle on two accounts. You love to drink all day long, albeit your drink is baby booze called Infamile Lipil for Gas and Fussiness, and you love to sleep. You've been sleeping through the night the past week and today you were awake a total of 40 minutes. That wasn't 40 solid minutes but bits and pieces through out the day. I can only figure that you're growing. This is partly the reason I've not posted any photos of you the last couple of days, you've been sleeping. I started to play with you and your beloved bowling pin this evening and I said, "look Daddy! He's playing with me!" Daddy said, "No you're playing with yourself, he is falling asleep!" I looked and sure enough you were all passing out on me. I know, I know! Right now it sounds as if I'm living up to the reputation of that role I played so many years ago but I'm not complaining or naggin' at ya. I know you're growing and it takes tons of energy. I am just doing my job of documenting you day in and day out behaviors and to share the last photos I tried to take of you. You were yawning SO much in a 10 minute period of time I could hardly get a photo of you with your mouth shut.

I love ya sleepy head,

Love, Momma

Dear Lily

Dear Lilly (Lily_ mommy and daddy spell it two different ways?),

Henry, Steve and I wanted to welcome you to the world and into our family of friends.

Your Mommy Brook and Daddy Corey have waited a long time to meet you! I don't think they ever thought it would be so quick a meeting! I am pretty sure they thought they would have the opportunity to prepare for you... but I think they have been preparing for you as long as they've been together. Your parents and Steve and I started to prepare for our children even before we started trying or started searching for you. Your parents and Steven and I have had lots of conversations about the things we'd love to do when you and Henry get here. Their hearts were full of hope and anticipation thinking you'd never show up... then BAM!

You're a beauty.

At home you also have two dogs, some cats and a handful of chickens waitin' for you. How cool is that? There may even be a goat there for ya too... I can't remember. I do know that your mommy will protect you with every breath of her own life armed with knowledge she'll make sure you're always getting everything intellectually and emotionally you could be as well as making sure you are healthy, loved and crafty. Your daddy will make you feel like a princess everyday you live and make sure you love and respect nature, cooking and life. They will raise you to have a conscience, to be a good person and to be confident in yourself because this is the people they are. They are fortunate to find you, and you are fortunate to be their daughter.

I wanted to share with you a couple of first comments your mommy made because as she gets to know you she may forget these little moments, as I was reading over our first moments with Henry I had already forgotten some of his.

"Its 3am and I'm walking from the hotel to the med center. I need to be with my girl. It's so hard because we do not have a private place to be with her."

"She is AMAZING. I can't say more now except you are right... It I'd like I'm dreaming." (excuse Mommy's errors, she'd only had 30 minutes of sleep.)

"I am wearing the little Mrs. in your wonderful sling. We
were released from the hospital early! Yay!"

You're going to have a life full of love, attention and adventure with Mommy Brook and Daddy Corey. We are so happy to have a new little friend and buddy for Henry and can't wait to meet you! We love you already.

(two l's or one in Lilly guys??)
Love,
Lisa, Steve and Henry

Introducing The Riemans

Dear Henry,

A wonderful thing has happened. You future best friend was just born a couple of days ago!
Our good friends and fellow IAC support group buddies Brook and Corey received a most exciting call on Monday. Mommy and Daddy were meeting with Kathy from IAC for our last follow up meeting and a call comes in. I answer and it is Brook cursin' like I've never heard her before. She is so excited to tell us they are getting on the plane to California as soon as possible to pick up their baby girl!!! WHAT!!!!!!! Heather, another friend and support group buddy, jumped into action and got our butts to the superstore to get the Riemans what they needed to be ready for Lily in California and when they get home.

Here they are holding you right before we left. Look at all of their suitcases back there!

Lily's birthmother and birthgrandmother were waiting to meet them with open arms. They are now in a hotel with Lily where when I last spoke to Brook she was hanging out in your little peanut shell sling super happy. In one of the first photos Mommy Brook had Lily wearing the special hat Heather knitted for you before you were born. It is a new tradition to pass it on to the next family.

Here you are week 1 in the hat.

Here is little Lil in the hat Day 3... I think.

Mommy Brook and Mommy look forward to play dates and fun with the two of you. Someday you will both get to share your special birth stories together and all of the miraculous things that fell into place over years of searching and in the final minutes to bring you and J to us and sweet Lily to Brook and Corey. She's a cutie! I'm so happy our support group is turning into the playgroup we all hoped for about a year ago. Now sweet Henry we wait for the others to find their babies. You and Lily will be the big brother and sister for them. I hope the other couples don't have long, Lily is a big 7lbs 15oz so it won't be fittin' her head for long. Once again I am humbled with gratitude that we are with you, I know our son couldn't have been anybody else but you with your lil butt chin and turned up nose.

The Musical Stylings of Doug and Peter

Dear Henry,

My posts are getting a little out of order after the weekends but I plan on teaching you how to read a
calendar, to order things chronologically, and to use other higher order thinking skills so you will be able to figure out these things. After all, I'm accustomed to about 15-32 in my classroom for 50-70 minutes a day, imagine what I can do with you all by your lonesome with an entire day, day in and day out? "Oh, poor Henry!" That's what any of my old students might be saying if they are reading this.

Anyhoooo none of that has a single thing to do with this post.

Friday you and I visited our good friends, Doug and Peter (see their website here),

they bought you that snake you love so much with the belled mouth. They are also looking for their special little girl or guy through open adoption and the Independent Adoption Center. Currently they are reworking their website and Dear Birth Mother Letter before their big adventure to Poland in May. They asked Mommy if she could take some new photos for their letter. After we took some for their main photo they wanted to play piano for you. I had NO idea how special this was going to be! They started out singing "How Great Thou Art" and I felt a lump of emotion. They are Quakers so I asked them if they would sing you some traditional Quaker songs. They obliged. They held you and sang beautiful songs from their Quaker song book and you looked REALLY content and just locked eyes with Doug. It was a very sweet moment I wanted to remember to share with you. I could see how happy their child will be someday singing along with them.

I'm so grateful you're here with us already.

Ortner Visit

Dear Henry,

Just when you thought just about everyone has met you that could possibly meet you the Ortner Clan came to town from Toledo. Five kid-lets, a mom and a dad, Great Grandma Hazel, and Grandma LaJean came to visit on Saturday.

They did the obligatory ooh's and ahh's, held and cuddled you and had some pizza. It was a fast visit as they were returning to Toledo the next day. It was fun to see the kids and to have the extra hands around for a while. The kids drew all over the driveway with chalk and I couldn't help but think how I can't wait for you to be big enough to do the same.

I love seeing the drawings as I drive up. It was good to see everyone as it can sometimes be a long time between visits with everyone working and the distance. Someday you will be excited to see them as there will be no shortage of energetic playmates. The boys will be just old enough to teach you how to get into some trouble. :)

Saturday was so beautiful that after the Ortners and Great Grandma and Grandma La Jean left Mommy and Daddy took you for a walk around the block.
We decided you are ready to face frontwards in the Baby Bjourn. You love the wind on your face but after about half a block you couldn't keep from turning your head to look into Daddy's eyes so we turned you back to Daddy's chest. This seemed to make you happier and Daddy didn't mind that you wanted to be closer to him one bit.

Today at 10:54 pm you are 7 weeks old. The Independent Adoption Agency does their final follow up visit today. :)

Love, Mommy

Fillin' in

Dear Henry,

Good news! You're still growing.
:)

Here are some cute pictures of you.

Gettin' Work Done

Dear Henry,

Yesterday I discovered a new thing about you...

You are a lot like Daddy. You really enjoy sitting in your Lamb-eee seat on the
front ramp and taking a nap in the sun like an old dog. I read somewhere that one should sit their child, that's you, where they can see you while you're working. We needed to get some flowers in our front pots so I did just that. The only problem is I don't think you learned a thing. The minute I took you out there you feel asleep and you did not wake up until I brought you back in to the house. Then you proceeded to eat like you have not had food for your entire short life.

Today I did the same thing. I needed to get the front and part of the side yard cut and so I put you in Lamb-ee and I cut across the front so I crossed the sidewalk, then I could see what you were up to. This time you didn't sleep. You were watching yourself in the mirror and trying to hit at Lamp-ee. You looked really happy! I'm not suprised. You are a good boy and like to sit and "play" by yourself or have me scoop you up and pester you for a bit, it doesn't matter to you.

I enjoy havin' my boy with me asleep or awake. It makes the work worth it, especially while Daddy is doing his part working hard everyday to take care of us.

Love,
Mommy

Cuddle Bear

Yeah. This is the life.

I'm Your Kingpin, Honey, and I'm Gettin' in Gear!

Dear Henry,

Yesterday when I was silk screening flyers for our friend Mason we watched Grease 2.
Mommy has loved Grease 2 since she fi
rst watched it at Amy Simmons' birthday party on VHS tape in elementary school. I still sing along, know all of the words and wish I could be friends with Michelle Pfeiffer. Our friend Samantha bought it for Mommy as a Christmas present because I couldn't shut up about needing to watch that movie. I watched it a couple of days before you were born and not again until yesterday. You seemed to like it alright, you fell asleep after the second or third song. I think the lyrics to "Score Tonight," sank in because last weekend Grandma P and Crappaw gave you a little bowling pin that was once Johnny's, not Johnny Nogerelli's silly, Johnny your cousin and I see real promise in your desire to bowl. With what little hand eye coordination you have in conjunction with your developing ability to "crawl" on your belly a few inches you love knockin' that pin over! I cheer you on and you seem to like that. I secretly, or not so secretly to some, imagine that the world is a musical so while you're "bowling" with your little pin I like to think of you singing the Grease 2 song with me, "Score Tonight."

I shake the pin and get you to see it then set it up a couple of inches out of reach. You will wiggle on your back to get at it and then swat it down with your hand.

If I roll you on your tummy and place the pin about 3 inches from your head you'll grunt, kick and squiggle around until your head knocks it over. Some people are likely doubting this ability, I must admit I did too for a moment so I had to test it. I started putting the pin off center and you were more than willing to change direction to get your head to make contact with it to bring it down.

So....
Imagine with me Henry.

____________________________________________________
Come on everybody, gather round.
I'm gonna show you how to knock 'em down.
When I'm on the ball, I'm the number one.
And I'm gonna show you how it's done.

Let's bowl, let's bowl, let's rock-'n-roll.
Hey, come on, let's get this show on the road.
Let's bowl, let's bowl, let's rock-'n-roll.
We're sittin' on a bomb that's about to explode. (SEE PREVIOUS POST)

These photos were taken before the previous post's episode..... so see... life is really like the musicals.

Love you,
Mommy

The Big Bang

Dear Henry,

The last couple of days things in your digestive tract have been switchin' it up a bit.
Your.... gas.... has been the most stinky thing to pass my nose... stinkier than the chicken markets in Mexico City. Someday I hope you experience this so you know what I'm talking about. I don't blame you. It is the formula but typically I think you need a changing and there is nothin' there... until today.

There was an explosion! I took off your little gray cords and grabbed your other leg to get your diaper off and felt something sticky. I looked down and saw your entire back, leg, toes, socks, pants, onesie and fingers covered in the sticky green clay. I won't try to act nonchalant about this. I had to sit and think for a good minute or two about what to do. We were in the middle of the living room with the wipes on the other side. So I put you on your fuzzy blanket and gently dragged you on it until I was close enough to reach the wipes. I got you roughly cleaned up using about 20 wipes, there were specks here and there so I gave you another bath. You are a real champ. It didn't seem to phase you a bit. You just stared at me and let me do what needed done.

I did something unforgivable in this economy, I just tossed those little square cords. I paid two bucks for them at Once Upon a Child so technically they were recycled and inexpensive so I'd already saved them once. I could not get the gunk out. Sorry. Funny how I noticed this morning that those little gray cords were about 1" too short, I just pulled them down a bit more than usual. Little gray cords are no more.

My camera was near-by so I got one shot. It doesn't capture inside the onesie or pants, ewe.

You liked the second bath and smiled when I said, "You are the stinkiest thing EVER, but I still love you!"

And I do.
Love,
Mommy, in the trenches.

Week 6

Dear Henry,

As of last night at 10:54 you are 6 weeks old.

"Way to go Mommy and Daddy!" is right! We've managed to feed, change, clothe and bathe you for 6 weeks and not mess up! Not that we thought we would... Not to mention you've survived our endless barrage of smooches and Daddy munchin' on your ears. You like the ear munches though, you often smile and tense up with glee. I'm just ecstatic that you're here and healthy. You're a great little man and after a long gaze out the front windows you are really enjoying a deep snooze in your swing right now. It has been rainy all day and it is really quite in the house, you're right to sleep. What else do you have to do? eat? poop? pee? smile a couple time? Sleep is good.

The photo below is from the weekend visit to Mason and Samantha's while Daddy and I took you for a drive in Mommy's car. I like this picture because your duck lips are irresistible.

Love you Buster,
Mommy

Cool Roller Dude

Dear Henry,
Last Thursday I decided to try on the crocheted roller skates your Aunties Kristin and Carrie brought over for you to wear. You looked pretty tuff and we had a fun time together taking pictures of you in the onesie they silk screened.

You're starting to smile socially more often. Just this morning you melted daddy's heart with your gummy dazzler. It made it hard for him to leave for wo
rk. You have that effect on people. They want to be around you.

I get to be the lucky one that doesn't have to leave your side.

Love, Mommy

Sock Monkey, Another Sign You're Growing

Dear Henry,

I loved this little outfit because I could really call you Hank while you are wearing it.

You have to be feelin' a little country. When I got it on you, however, I couldn't tell if you looked like you were working on Grease Lightening or getting ready to sing Hunk A Hunk of Burnin' Love. Either way I love you in it!

A little perspective... photo 1 is you with your beloved sock monkey 5 days old...

Here you are with sock monkey 1 month 2 days old...

I love you Elvis,

Mommy
