10

Dear Mommy and Daddy,
This is Henry. I am turning 10 at 10 o'clock, I think. This is my first post. I am really excited to turn 10, mostly for the presents, but also because I'm 10 and I've been alive for 10 years!
Mommy, you asked me to write my first blog. You gave me some questions to help me.
Who is one of your best friends? Describe three things you like about them.
One of my best friends is E. He is funny, kind, smart, and caring. One example of him being funny is like the time yesterday, when we were having a party-ish thing and we were playing a game where you were supposed to build a wall out of pillows. The other two people were trying to knock it down but E had a brilliant idea of just hiding in the workroom instead of building a wall. Then A and C came down from the stairs to break the wall we were supposed to have built, but since we didn't, they were all confused and surprised. They started yelling our names because they didn't know where we were. We were back in the dark workroom listening to them, laughing. Our laughing gave it away. It was a good joke.
What is one of your oldest memories?
One of my oldest memories, I don't know how old I was, maybe one? two? We went to Bahboo's and Grandma P's house. I thought they were random people who were taking caring of me and I was wondering why they were loving me so much. I thought, "Yes! Keep giving me cookies, please!" I just didn't understand our connection to them. I don't remember when I put our connection together but now I'd like to be with them more often because I don't get to see them as often as I'd like because they're kind and they're fun to be around (whispers:and they give me candy and stuff).
Tell me a story of when you were afraid?
We took a weekend trip to Louisville. It was in October and we visited a pumpkin patch. Now, when I say pumpkin patch I mean there were pumpkins taller than me and hundreds and hundreds of pumpkins all over the place, everywhere. Turn left, there is a pumpkin. Turn right, there is a pumpkin. Look up, pumpkin. I look down and I nearly stepped on a pumpkin. Pumpkins were every five steps and even in the trees. It was night and super dark. All of these pumpkins were lit up and had faces carved into them, aka jack-o-lanterns. Some were very realist and creepy, while others were basic jack-o-lanterns. They lined a long path through the woods. We were walking having a great time, looking at the pumpkins. We were almost at the end of the pumpkin thing and I saw a really cool pumpkin. I pointed it out to Hazel, she didn't respond. I realized Hazel wasn't even with us. We all started freaking out. We told everyone around us. There was an off-duty police officer behind us. He tried to tell as many people and staff as possible. We went to the end of the path. A good 20 minutes had passed and a staff employee walked up to us. She asked us if she had black pig tails? We said yes. She said they found her standing in line waiting for a funnel cake. I felt very relieved knowing Hazel was ok and didn't die by being consumed by a pumpkin.
Here is a picture of me and my birthmom, JoJo. We are hugging. It is really nice to know her. She is kind, funny and my birthmom. We had a birthday dinner together at a Japanese place, which I think I've had 2 or 3 birthdays at. She hadn't tried Japanese food before. She didn't like the sushi. I didn't like it either this time because it wasn't as good as it usually is. The avocado was smooshy, it all was. I like it when it has that crisp bite.
This my plant Barry. I bought him with birth-mis day money. There was a bigger plant with it, Benry, but it died. I like taking care of plants and getting new ones to grow bigger.
This is me and Sock. When I was born you got two sock monkeys. You gave one to JoJo and one to me. This is me with him and the clothing I was supposed to come home with but I took a giant CRAP all over everything! I had to get a stupid, like, off white colored thing from the hospital. It was worn and it sucked.
Here, Sock and I are 5 days old.
I love you mom and dad. Thank you for taking care of me for 10 years.
Love,
Henry

Starting School, for Realsies
Dear Babes,
(I am writing this months after the fact, I will not relinquish this diary for you both to the busy minutia of life. I sware!)
Big events in the Thompsons. You are both at the same school this year! Excitement built days before the big launch to two Thompsons in all day school. You created your first days signs, cultivated your look for the first day and cleaned out book bags readying lunch boxes. For Henry this was an old hat, but admittedly with new hair. This summer we allowed you to try dying your hair various colors. First it was cyan, then purple for the first day of school. Hazel patiently waited through a small bleach and reddened strip after your pro haircut. I feel mama did a pretty great job for a first time.

Daddy and I shared in the first day send off and brought you into school. You two hugged and went to your respective rooms. Hazel you couldn't really wait for us to leave and you were already gathering friends around you. You were gung ho for about three days and then excited exhaustion bore down and you begged to just stay home with mama. I had to vow each morning to snuggle time immediately after returning home from pick up. I don't mind that one bit.
Teachers told me that you, Henry would check in on Hazel during the day that first week. About three weeks in Hazel, you told me that, "during the day you go to Henry's cubby and smell the stuff in it because you miss Henry so much. Though your classrooms are next door to each other you don't get the opportunity to be with each other frequently. When it came time for passions class, though, the second and third cycles you were in the same classroom. That was exciting for your both for a short time.
As far as mama, I have been working the photography game as much as possible. I have had a lot of work! I have almost been too busy to notices the difference but I do notice. I miss the cuddle time in the after noon with your sweet lil arms wrapped around me. On the days I don't have any work, I don't have any appointments, I don't have a project I feel a little lost without my two buddies. I look forward to picking you up each day and sometimes it is hard to just wait until 3:20.
I have taken up volunteering in your kindergarten classroom, Hazel. I help and work with mostly other students but I feel my little magnet pulling me in all day. I have made lots of little friends but when it is cool down time after play time it is my little buddy I sprawl on the floor with for a quick cuddle.
I can't believe we are here. All the basic firsts checked off the long list. Now, we just wait as you get older and older and forge your own life and relationships. It is all good, but, admittedly, if I ruminate too long I might feel a little tear slip down my face.
I love you both so much. I love seeing your successes this year at school.
Love, Mommy
