Everyone Knows About the Bird, The Bird is the Word....

Dear Henry,

If in any given day you are tired of me taking your photo all you need to do is simply say, "Mama, give me a break."

This photo is complements of your new found hands and improved dexterity.

I love you a little bit more because you did this. Is that wrong?

Love, Mommy

Reading is FUNdamental

Dear Henry,

Many times since you've come to be around here there are these short passages of time in which everything seems to slow down and there is not a single thing in my head other than that moment of your new experience. This is saying a lot as there is an Indy 500 of ideas and thoughts
racing in my brain at any instance; complete with pit stops, crashes and victories. In these moments when I can shut all my brain's crap-talk off all things are in line and a steady hum of happy contentment ensues. I sigh and enjoy it for as long as it lasts and will ruminate on it later. This past week you started to change a lot. You slipped from being a crunchie baby, as Brook calls it, to more boy like; more human less animal.

You look around with a look of understanding, you grab things, laugh, respond, "talk", smile, follow, snuggle back, sit for seconds unassisted, and use your hands to swat. You are starting to show your developing ability to problem solve and make decisions about where you want to be, see and do. I can tell sometimes you are a little bored and think of a silly song to sing to you or read you a book.

Last week during one of the hundreds of special moments, someday to be one of thousands, Daddy came home from work and Mommy was cooking dinner for us, Chicken Parmesan I believe. You were on the counter laying on your blanket Aimee made you lookin' a little bored. Mommy had just taken you to the library. I got out a couple of the books we checked out so Daddy could read to you. Daddy chose
Elmer's Day. A book Mommy chose because you have a great grandpa Elmer. Daddy opened the book and started to read to you. You became enthused and kicked your legs. After a couple of pages you started to actually touch around the page and engage in the whole thing. You cooed and smiled at times, all the while a pretty stream of light fit for a Renaissance painting flitted through the window and threw glossy twinkles in the eyes of my two boys, birds were singing and the heavens opened up to spread love and world peace to all... well, something like that... anyway... my chicken parm kicked butt and you and Daddy had some good bonding time. It was a sweet time.

Again, my gratitude of havin' my baby boy and my hard working husband in the kitchen while I finished dinner made my head hum.

Mommy used to wonder if her strong desire to be a stay-at-home mom/housewife was a rejection of all the hard work of women and forward thinking men before me to earn the right and ability to expand past the confines of the house. I now know that being a mother and wife does not reject that work because the key word is choice. Daddy works hard to afford us the opportunity to stay home together. I know many families do not have this luxury. I can't say enough how grateful I am to be able to make that choice. Thanks to all of the work toward equal opportunities
I'm happy that you will grow up in a world where it will be acceptable for you to be home to do the same with your child.

I love teaching but, Peep Peep, I love you in my core. I'm glad to know that it is my arms that wrap around you when you wake up after your nap, my voice (you poor thing) that sings you silly songs in the afternoon, my shirt you pee on during bath time (although I would swap that one out for a rudimentary "mama" or a high five) and my hands that pat your man size burps up and out from your tummy.

Love, Mama

Lazy Daze

Dear Henry,

You love your Grandma P and Crappaw.
Your most recent play date you slept with Grandma P in the hammock swing and

Crappaw tried to get you to crawl some. You seemed pretty happy up on his mountain of a chest. They love you and so do I.

Makin' memories and family, Love,
Mommy

Grandma La Jean's Sleep Ova!

Dear Henry,

This past weekend was very special, but then every weekend and every day for that matter is special with you. This was the first time Grandma La Jean has been able to come spend the night with you! She has been busy helpin' Great Grandma Hazel get on the mend so she hasn't been able to come and get lots of time with you. Because Daddy's van has been out of
commission since you were 5 weeks old, you haven't been able to go and see her in C-town either. What a major bummer! This weekend she helped you get your bath, eat, burp, go to sleep, read a book, talk, laugh and get lots of cuddles.

We met Auntie Kristin at the Farmer's Market and we all had breakfast together at the Village Deli on Kirkwood. Mommy washed dishes there while in college. Daddy had 14" blueberry pancakes. I swear Henry, you could have used those pancakes as a blanket!

We walked around the market and bought some cheese then came back to our house. Later, we went to dinner at the hibachi grill. It was delicious, but you were scared at the chef clankin' around the spatulas. You were just on the edge of sleep and he started cookin' and clank, clank, chick, clank. You wailed until he stopped, you don't like sharp sounds like that.

Sunday morning before Grandma LaJean had to return back to C-town she
held you. talked with you for a bit, and then said her goodbyes.

I'm so glad that you were able to spend some quality time with Grandma LaJean, she sure does love you.

Love, Mo

Kangaroo and her Joey

Dear Henry,

Mommy has not made use of the baby carrier for several weeks because I worried you are not getting enough stimulation turned inward. You would put your little hands on your forehead and fall asleep, peaking up occasionally to make sure Mommy was in fact still there. Daddy and Mommy have tried to put you in outward facing but your lil' melon was still way to floppy to hold it up for very long and your body was not quite long enough for your face to clear the carrier.
Well, last Friday Mommy needed to get some housework done before Grandma La Jean's visit and I put you in the baby carrier frontward facing.

You loved it! You could see, you could kick your lil' legs and bat around your wild arms and hands. Your signal to get out is turning your head back and forth quickly trying to look behind you to see my eyes. I was glad to have you more physically connected to me again and was able to get some house work done, the both of two worlds. Then Saturday at the Farmer's Market you were in again and were fine. Yesterday at the library Mommy could tell you enjoyed it because you were looking around at everything frantically trying to fill your growing brain to full before you passed out again. After about an hour I think you were saturated and you shut down, falling asleep with your head in the crook of my arm. The carrier made it easier for you to look and for me to hold you when you were dreaming about all the wonderful books you might want to read someday. Now, that is a day I can't wait for!

We were also able to see J and the boys yesterday as they made a trip over to Bloomington. We met them outside of the library. You were in the carrier and were having a good time smiling at Tommy and babbling. I said, "I love you," trying to get you to say it in front of J and you did! She was impressed but Tommy was more impressed and said, "Hey! that baby says words," and, "that baby smiled at me!" It was a quick visit but good to see J just the same. She raved over what a chunky monkey you are and told Mommy she was recently able to get updated on the blog while visiting J Mom a week or so ago. We are hoping she is able to go to the IAC picnic this Sunday and bring the boys.

I think we will have to go for a walk today when Daddy gets home so he can put you in the carrier and enjoy your improved ability to control your head and upper body.

I Love you my little joey,
Mommy

Visitor

Dear Henry,

Today we had a nice visit, after much phone tag, with Cousin Janie.
We had a nice long talk about our adoption experiences and then we opened the nice gift she brought you. A cute little jump suit, some sweet smellin' bubble bath for Mommy, and a cute little roley poly doll with a jingler on it's head. She reads our blog too so I hope she is excited to make an entry.

It was so nice to see her. She was the flower girl in Grandma P and Crappaw's wedding! I know that was a LONG time ago...(sorry Grandma P and Crappaw) When Mommy was a little girl she really looked up to Janie/ Jane Anne. She was a little older and Mommy thought she was SO movie starlet pretty, really cool, super nice and uber creative. I remember going to her graduation, then to an exhibit of some of her art work, and to her wedding which I thought was one of the most fun times I had had up to that point in my life. I even remember the day after her boy Issac was born. It was close to Mommy's birthday in 1995, I think. There was almost a tornado that day! He was born in the same hospital that you were. I also remember when they were brought together with their second boy, Joey, who made it all the way from Korea! See Henry, our family grows in lots of different ways. Birth with a tornado, from across the world, or in a small town nearby; our family finds each other. I suppose it is kind of like how Mommy and Daddy found each other. I'm glad that Cousin Janie found our number again and gave us a call. Even though we don't see each other often I know how important family is to her, as it is to me and I hope someday it will be for you too. We don't have to see everyone everyday to know that they love us and think about us. Much like we know your birth family thinks and cares about you, Mommy and Daddy!

Mommy will make an effort to keep in better contact with Cousin Janie and other family we've let distance grow between. I want you to know everyone.

Love, Mommy

Hank and Lily; Encounter 2

Dear Henry,

On Tuesday we ventured to Greenwood with Brook and Lily to get more baby accoutrements from Babies R Us. Before we left Daddy gave you some advice on talking to girls. It cracked Mommy up because it was his very strategy that made me feel like he was not interested in me at all, leading me to nearly give up. You took Daddy's advice and "played it cool and were a gentleman." You are pretty much always cool and a gentleman so it was not a big leap for you. Daddy and I spoke on the phone while we were in Greenwood and he asked if you and Lily were playing okay. I am not sure you know that the other exists but you did fine. As mentioned on Babbles by Brook when we went to lunch at the Cheese Cake Factory we were thrown off when the hostess asked, "table for four." We looked at each other and had to have the lady tell us, "the babies count." !!!! Of course the babies count! You and Lily waited patiently for a table and as you can see from the photos your "be cool and play hard to get" was not keeping the lady's attention. You look at a loss as to what you should do. No worries, you'll learn to be more social I am certain, especially once you learn to talk. Honestly, I would probably be a little quiet and low key too if I had a wet diaper. We had a great lunch and some decadent cheesecake, Mommy had lemon raspberry and Mommy Brook had banana. YEOW! It was good!

Mommy Brook and Mommy took the two of you by the
Independent Adoption Center to say hello to the people that helped us all to get together. Kim and Kathy were excited to see you both.

They thought you were getting really big and growing quickly and they thought Lily was a beauty, of course. Kim and Kathy were there with you and J the day after you were born and supported us all in this process. They were training a new counselor for the North Carolina office and were happy to take a break to see the babies. I showed you your photos on the wall, our old birth mother letter, you wrestling sock monkey, and your name on the list of about 54 adoptions completed by the IAC so far in 2009.

After this we went to Meijer's to take
back some things Lily was too big to wear even before she was able to wear them. The two of you sat side by side in the cart and were chill through out the store. Mommy Brook was looking to buy a book for Lily and found the one she was looking for which happens to be your special book, "On the Night You Were Born." This is the book that Mommy and Daddy try to read to you once a week, but we can't make it to the end without barrels of tears in tow. We headed home and to our delight Daddy was getting in at the exact same time.

We spent the rest of the evening relaxing together. It was a fun day! Mommy had lady time and you had some Lily time, albeit it was a little distant you warmed up to each other in the end.

We can't wait to spend more time with Lily and Brook. How fortunate we are to have good friends...Those Rieman women are sweet!

Love, Mommy
